Political vegetable gardening in Madrid

I came across this vegie garden in the centre of Madrid today, in la Puerta del Sol.

La Puerta de Sol

one of the remaining protest tents
Sol is pretty much Madrid's central and most famous square, and yet like Barcelona's Catalunya Square, it's been the site of recent protests, with activists camping out in the square (although I should point out that there's little protester presence remaining in the Madrid square compared to Barcelona). The result of the Madrid protest was this beautiful vegetable garden around the fountain.  According to a local I spoke to, the protesters ripped out all the ornamentals and planted these tomatoes, curcubits, lettuces.  I love the notion of political gardening.

  1. I love that! Let's see more veges growing in random places round town. That would be fantastic!
